Introduction

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) invited a delegation of 15 international science journalists on a press tour to Germany on the future of work from 21 to 26 October 2018.

The way we work is changing fast. Digitisation, automation and globalisation are having a profound impact on the world of work. How and where will we work in the future? What kind of skills and education will we need? Will robots and intelligent machines take our jobs? This press tour picked up the topic of the "Science Year 2018 – Working Life of the Future", and set out to explore the challenges and opportunities of the working life of the future.

We would like to thank the participating institutions for their kind support!

"The tour allowed me to know with privileged access what are the great challenges to the future of work and answers that Germany has for it. Personally I think it was an experience of the highest academic level and very pleasant for the kindness and professionalism of the entire DAAD team and the spokespersons in each site visited from the material released, the talks offered and the luxury access to the research programs. Add to that the beautiful German south in autumn and the pleasant company of the group ... frankly it is not possible to ask for more.”

"This tour was great for me. I got interesting ideas for several stories. During the tour, it was sometimes difficult for me to imagine how I would process and put together so many different pieces of information, but I think I was able to manage that and write something sound and interesting. It always helps if journalists have chance to meet people in person, talk to them and see interesting demonstrations. We got plenty of such possibilities during the tour".

"What inspires me the most about the "Future of Work" press tour is the vision and belief of German experts and researchers about an Industry 4.0 future that still put humans as an irreplaceable focus, and in which technological advancements do not need to be at the expense of sustainability or labourers' well-being.”
