Healthcare is a private matter – but at the same time, it’s also a public concern. The prosperity of whole societies depends on the health of their populations. For individual states, the only way to deal with challenges such as the spread of infectious diseases across international borders and the growth in antimicrobial resistance is by working in collaboration with others. For this reason, the German government focuses on leveraging partnerships in its Global Health Strategy.
The national strategy outlines eight priority areas, including prevention, climate-resilient healthcare systems and pandemic prevention, and explicitly involves the private sector. For example, the German Health Alliance consolidates the work of German healthcare businesses around the world, building bridges between industry, policymakers and markets. The “One Health” approach constitutes a core element of the strategy, recognising that the health of humans, animals and the wider environment is interdependent and calls for a holistic response.
The One Health approach plays a significant role in India as well. The Indian government has adopted the slogan “One Earth, One Health” for its work in forging international partnerships and to build a robust architecture for global healthcare. Programmes such as the National One Health Mission are boosting interdisciplinary research collaborations.
In the field of global health, Brazil is driving change by prioritising research in areas such as biotechnology, personalised medicine, infectious diseases and vaccine development, to name but a few. Brazil has one of the world’s largest universal healthcare systems and is considered an international reference. Free of charge and available to all who live in Brazil, the Sistema Único de Saúde provides services ranging from prevention to treatment and rehabilitation.
No society in the world ages as fast as the Japanese population. At the same time Japan holds the record for the longest healthy life expectancy. By employing technologies such as care robots, exoskeletons and AI-supported monitoring systems, Japan is a role model for other countries in its approach to a healthy and dignified old age. "Beyond technology, concepts such as ikigai – as of purpose through meaningful activity – are increasingly recognized as a key factor in Japan's record healthy life expectancy."
In the United States, healthcare technology innovations are flourishing, due in no small measure to the COVID pandemic, which revealed weaknesses also in New York City’s healthcare system. In response, New York is prioritising efforts to eradicate health inequalities and improve healthcare for all the city’s inhabitants.
The Bay Area’s combination of cutting-edge research and startups makes it the ideal environment for breakthroughs in medical research, and Germany is a valued partner in the region. Numerous joint projects and programmes are facilitating opportunities to share knowledge, ideas and resources.

Zahar Barth-Manzoori: What both countries have in common is that their innovation ecosystems would be nowhere near as dynamic if they didn’t have powerful scientific foundations. In the Bay Area and in India, many new companies emerge out of outstanding research. The two countries are also focusing their work on very similar areas that will be critical to our futures, such as AI, climate tech, health and med tech, mobility and digital infrastructure. The biggest difference is in the logic of the two ecosystems. Venture capital and deep-tech spin-offs have a huge presence in the Bay Area. There’s more capital moving around here than on any other continent, and radical new technologies play a key role, often emerging from tech companies and top universities.
Arthur Rapp: By contrast, India is a huge and highly heterogenous country. It’s also a market where price is a major factor, where solutions need to work across many different contexts, in different languages, in a range of income brackets and through widely varying infrastructure. The result is that innovation takes on a different focus, where alongside high tech there’s also an emphasis on affordable accessible technologies that make a social impact in areas such as climate protection, improving healthcare, opening up access to education and fighting poverty. That’s one of the reasons why the Indian government is providing targeted funding for start-ups.
Aadishree Jamkhedkar: To start with, we should say we’re not here to help established start-ups get a foothold in the market in the conventional sense. Above all, we work with teams based in science and academia in an early phase of the start-up process. We facilitate networks and programmes for co-creation, joint technology development and technology transfer. We also support teams who are looking for co-founders. In formats such as Innovators Connect – Tandem we bring together 30 German and Indian researchers and founder teams every year. Through the programme we provide intensive mentoring, opportunity for collaborative product development and tailored matchmaking with co-founders, incubators and deep-tech investors.
Zahar Barth-Manzoori: It’s similar for us in that we don’t act as incubators, either. We help participants gain access to the US market and find partners. It was a deliberate choice to focus our programmes on the initial stages, so we work with early-stage teams and researchers who are only just starting to think like entrepreneurs. Here in San Francisco, for example, we offer the GUILD Women in Entrepreneurship programme. Every year, we organise an online entrepreneurship academy to assist 100 women from the German science system and then bring ten finalists to San Francisco.
Zahar Barth-Manzoori: It’s just one example, but one founder from the most recent series said it was the first time that she had really represented her firm as its CEO, and that she no longer concealed herself behind her role as a scientist. Even if we only contributed one percent of that, it’s a success. In future, we want to bring together the alumni of DWIH programmes for a gathering in Germany. Teaching intercultural competences is another very important part of our job. Many people underestimate the cultural differences between Germany and the US. What we’re trying to do is to share our experience and recommend ways to establish more contacts.
Aadishree Jamkhedkar: The participants get in-depth insights into India’s research, innovation and start-up ecosystem. They also get an opportunity to network with stakeholders from innovation, industry and academia, which helps them access international expertise at an early stage. Networks are also being established in India and Germany, as more than 15 transfer centres and incubators from both countries are actively involved in the programme. This programme has inspired many researchers to found their own start-ups.
Aadishree Jamkhedkar: The DWIH network is essential. Depending on the context, we refer interested persons to other DWIH locations. One example of how we collaborate is from 2023, when DWIH New Delhi was closely involved in India’s G20 Presidency, which included co-chairing the International Alliances of the G20 Startup Engagement Group. Then in 2024, Brazil took over the G20 Presidency, so naturally we shared our experiences and contacts with our colleagues at DWIH São Paulo. One story that I find particularly impressive is that of the young Indian scientist Dr Komali Valishetti, who completed her PhD in Germany and participated in the Innovators Connect – Tandem programme in India – her home country. From that, the GUILD Women in Entrepreneurship programme helped her take the idea she had developed in India over to San Francisco, where her successes included wins in start-up competitions. Since then, she has been awarded two founder scholarships from the German EXIST programme and has co-founded a successful start-up in Berlin.
Arthur Rapp: Above all, programme participants from Germany learn to think on a different scale. The market here is huge, diverse and highly competitive. German participants also get to experience an ecosystem that is highly dynamic and very open to taking risks. In India, there are over 200,000 registered start-ups, and in 2025 alone, over 44,000 start-ups were registered – more than in any previous year. In turn, Indian teams profit from the methodical approach to work and structure from Germany. This blend of speed, scalability and systematic preparation is a key learning benefit. All this is supplemented by intercultural training, in which participants learn how to be realistic in their expectations and build sustainable partnerships.
Zahar Barth-Manzoori: At the heart of it all is an entrepreneurial mindset in which you understand who you are developing for, what the benefits of your idea are and how to communicate those benefits clearly. The people who come here to learn how to communicate complex research clearly in three minutes benefit hugely in terms of their self-confidence in their professional lives. Many researchers come to us with more than one idea, and we help them focus their efforts. Mentoring plays an important role in our programmes, and we take great care to find the perfect partner. The more specific you are when matchmaking, the more helpful it is.
Zahar Barth-Manzoori: Our work is becoming increasingly strategic, extending well beyond the task of building networks. Our role is no longer just to build bridges in the conventional sense. We need to be seeking out which stakeholders we can bring together in the right constellations. As for the future of the start-up scene, internationality and diversity are its lifeblood – almost half of all start-ups are founded by young people from other countries. However, both aspects are under pressure. The Bay Area has always been a place for people who think differently and challenge the status quo. That’s not going to change. However, the changing political landscape is certainly having an impact on start-ups.
Arthur Rapp: Over the next few years, India will see continued growth in its economic and geopolitical significance, as demonstrated by the free trade agreement signed recently between India and the EU. Another recent example of this growing importance is India hosting the AI Summit late February - the first country outside Europe to do so. These are clear signs of how the country is increasingly valued as a global driver of innovation. At DWIH New Delhi, we will closely observe these developments and support them wherever we can. Looking at Indian start-ups, we have observed an increasing trend towards co-creation and technology transfer. Ultimately, it is about networking and sharing knowledge as widely as possible - and hopefully wonderful things will emerge from it.
Thanks to a partnership with researchers from Germany, a critical aspect has been added to expand a scientific idea from Tokyo. An approach from Munich gains new momentum from perspectives originating in São Paulo. Moments such as these require spaces which make them possible – the DWIH. They transform contacts into collaborations, and turn collaborations into sustainable progress.

One Health includes the fight to counter bacterial resistance to antibiotics.
Antibiotic resistance has a huge economic impact, which will add up to $1 trillion to the cost of healthcare until 2050, according to World Bank estimates.
But the news isn’t all bad: the World Health Organization reports that 178 countries now have national action plans to fight antimicrobial resistance based on the One Health approach.
Healthcare is a global responsibility. Diseases know no borders – and neither should the responses to them. Outstanding research can achieve its full impact only as part of international networks. That is the only means by which we will be able to secure global health research for the long term and arm ourselves for future crises.

New York University has been part of the DWIH New York network for four years. Nina Gray, Interim Vice Provost for Research, still vividly remembers the first contact, a high-level panel on neuroscience that brought together renowned research groups from the United States and Germany. NYU positions itself as a global university, with campuses on several continents and a mission to educate students and researchers as globally minded actors. International partnerships are part of its identity. In this sense, the partnership with DWIH is an ideal fit and has developed from individual events into a genuine strategic bridge between NYU and the German research system.
DWIH plays a role that Gray describes as crucial: opening doors, building networks, and enabling encounters. Whether at NYU’s German House, the German Consulate, or conferences in the United States. A particularly formative moment was the Falling Walls Science Summit in November 2025, during which NYU hosted two events with support from DWIH.
2025 was an important year for the cooperation: NYU and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin signed a partnership agreement that formalized the long-standing collaboration between the two universities. At the same time, DWIH supported a symposium on neurological and psychiatric disorders at NYU School of Medicine in cooperation with the University of Cologne.
Nina Gray sees NYU on a path toward further partnerships with German universities. She hopes that more NYU researchers will make use of funding programs offered by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and that cooperation between Germany and the United States will continue to grow. In the current political environment, this cannot be taken for granted. That makes the partnership with DWIH all the more meaningful, as a strong signal that NYU is determined to expand its international collaborations.

Compact sessions with a manageable number of participants, intensive exchange on current topics, high-ranking political guests –Erika Kovacs-Bogdan has fond memories of the DWIH New York Future Forum. Kovacs-Bogdan works as a Principal Alliance Manager, at the Broad Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts, an independent, non-profit research institute with close ties to Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University. It is one of the world's leading centers for biomedical research – with pioneering work in genomics and drug development and the ambition to rapidly translate these into the development of new therapies and medicines. Under the title "Health, Tech, Diplomacy," the Future Forum took place there in 2025. As an Alliance Manager at the interface with industry partners, Kovacs-Bogdan was heavily involved in the organization.
For the Broad Institute, which innovates at the intersection of scientific disciplines, the cooperation with the DWIH opens up perspectives on application-oriented fields such as AI-supported cluster analyses or medical technology. Kovacs-Bogdan also mentions that the DWIH's network in the start-up and venture capital scene could be beneficial. For the DWIH, the Broad Institute is a strategically important partner: it combines excellent research with a strong network in Boston's biotech hub.
Robert Dehghan is co-founder and CEO of the German start-up ISTARI. The company operates in the field of market intelligence and has developed an AI-supported method that uses publicly available sources to compile precise and highly up-to-date data on specific industry clusters. Dehghan first came into contact with DWIH in 2024 through the STEP USA University Program. This quickly developed into a close collaboration.

At DWIH’s initiative, Dehghan and his team examined the healthcare ecosystems of Massachusetts and Baden-Württemberg as a case study; the results were presented at the Future Forum in September 2025. The degree of international networking proved particularly revealing. While Germany plays only a marginal role for the U.S. cluster, German companies are strongly oriented toward the United States. For Dehghan, this demonstrates how important actors such as DWIH are in creating targeted connections between the innovation ecosystems of both countries. A second joint project followed in November: a workshop at Harvard University as part of the German American Conference. There, students used the ISTARI tool to search for companies in the United States and Germany according to specific criteria and assess their potential.
ISTARI has particularly benefited from DWIH’s network. Through the Future Forum, the team established contacts in the biotech sector and got to know the German-American Business Council of Boston. Together with the latter, the start-up has since submitted a joint proposal at the European level on the topic of entering the U.S. market. The Harvard conference also created valuable new connections. The collaboration now even extends beyond New York: ISTARI plans to work with additional DWIH locations in the future.

Silence falls in a gym at the SESI sport centre in São Paulo. A disabled sportsman braces himself and thrusts himself up off the floor. It's the first time he has ever completed a press-up without additional help. Spontaneously, everyone in the room starts counting out loud with each repetition. Moments like this are what Cara Ammann and Lisa-Marie Frühauf have spent years working for. They prove that their innovation is making a difference where it matters most. Ammann and Frühauf are the co-founders of Softletics, a start-up that creates individually adjustable prosthetics that customers can order online. Their goal is to democratise access to prosthetics and reach under-served groups in remote regions.

Amman and Frühauf’s vision proved to be a compelling idea, and Softletics won first prize in the Startups Connected competition in 2025. The competition is run by the DWIH São Paulo for German start-ups that create innovative solutions in global healthcare. The prize for the two founders was a week-long roadshow in Brazil, along with a year’s membership of the São Paulo Chamber of Commerce Abroad (AHK). Organised and supported by the DWIH, the trip in November 2025 made all the difference in opening doors for Ammann and Frühauf. “The DWIH gave us access to important stakeholders and supported us linguistically and culturally,” Ammann explains.
Thanks to the roadshow, the two founders made some lasting contacts. Disabled Brazilian athletes are currently testing Softletics prosthetics and providing feedback. Ammann and Frühauf are also in talks with hospitals and potential manufacturing partners to explore producing their prosthetics in Brazil. The DWIH remains at their side as they take their next steps into the Brazilian market. “We’re still in close contact,” Ammann observes. “What we find particularly helpful is their support in communicating with local stakeholders, and in dealing with regulatory and market-specific questions.”

Why not continue your research in Germany after completing your PhD? For Andréia Fressatti Cardoso, the question was an exciting possibility for the next stage of her career. Born in Brazil, Cardoso studies the rights of migrants, especially those in the United States, who do not hold legal residence status. She was awarded her PhD by the University of São Paulo in September 2025.
A few months before completing her doctorate, Cardoso attended a “Postdoc in Germany” workshop at the Goethe-Institut in São Paulo. With the DWIH as the principal organiser, the workshops have a clear purpose: to connect German higher education institutions and funding bodies with researchers from Brazil. The goal is to foster relationships, provide orientation and help participants make contacts.

Andréia Fressatti Cardoso
Andréia Fressatti Cardoso is just one example of the success of the programme. The political scientist had heard about opportunities in Germany, but at first she wasn’t sure if her research priorities would meet with interest there. “I was all the more surprised when I was introduced to a professor from Germany who wanted to know more about my research,” she says. Cardoso describes the final session as particularly memorable, as it was an opportunity to speak to representatives of universities and funding bodies. She made use of these contacts later to prepare for the next stage of her career.
In late 2025, Cardoso applied for a CAPES Humboldt Research Scholarship, which helps postdocs from Brazil pursue their research projects in Germany. But regardless of the outcome of her application, she is sure about one thing: “Germany has become an important objective in my academic career, and the DWIH workshop was a decisive factor in that. It piqued my interest in Germany and has helped set the course for my future career.”
How can you convert your city’s bus system to run on electricity? This is just one of the questions which experts at the Mobility2Grid research campus in Berlin are grappling with. Dr Martin Gegner of the Berlin Social Science Center is part of the team there. “Mobility2Grid brings together partners from academia and industry,” he says. “We have helped organisations such as the Berlin transport authority and the Berlin sanitation department transition to electric fleets.”

The team of researchers in Berlin are looking well beyond Germany’s borders, too, as a symposium in Rio de Janeiro in September 2025 showed. Attended by around 60 delegates, the hybrid event allowed specialists in the field to discuss barriers to and innovations in the transition to electric buses. The symposium was organised by the DWIH São Paulo, Mobility2Grid and UFRJ Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and is a good example of the role played by the DWIH in bringing together policymakers, industry and society to develop solutions tailored to specific problems.

Martin Gegner describes the Rio symposium as a “milestone” for Mobility2Grid. “One immediate outcome was a number of research collaborations with organisations such as UFRJ and Mackenzie Presbyterian University in São Paulo,” he says. The DWIH is a key player in these partnerships, and it has become Gegner’s first port of call in his work on Brazil and Latin America. “Information about potential partners is particularly valuable. By this, I mean the contacts who would simply be out of reach without the DWIH São Paulo,” he explains.
Following the symposium, Mobility2Grid and the DWIH intend to expand their collaboration in 2026. They are planning online formats for exploring energy and mobility transition technologies. They are also developing “real labs” to test innovations in energy and transportation in real-life conditions.
A proven partner: On a hill in the north of Rio de Janeiro stands the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, known as Fiocruz. Anyone looking to establish a scientific presence in the Bay Area needs one thing above all: access to the right networks – and someone who can turn contacts into collaborations. For the Technical University of Munich (TUM), this role in San Francisco is carried out by Tim Bombosch, who serves as Senior Regional Manager North America and Liaison Officer. His responsibilities are clearly defined: “My primary task is to support research collaborations between TUM and North American universities,” he says. His work also includes alumni relations, marketing, and recruitment.

What networking looks like in practice became evident during the “Career Fair & Networking Reception” held in San Francisco in September 2025. “The event was a great opportunity for us to showcase TUM’s expertise in medical technology, biotechnology, and entrepreneurship,” Bombosch explains. A second session focused on sustainability across different research fields – also with an eye toward attracting prospective students and researchers to TUM: “We want to attract talent from North America and other parts of the world to Germany. We want them to become part of our community.”
To turn promising conversations into lasting professional relationships, Bombosch relies on a strong German network in San Francisco. He feels well supported – including by DWIH. For him, the collaboration is more than just organizational support: “We want to foster innovative partnerships in North America and build bridges between people, institutions, and cultures.” He sums up the impact of this support in one sentence: “My work is made a hundred times easier through the support of DWIH, the Consulate, and the German Research Foundation.”

Around 8,820 kilometers separate Kiel and San Francisco. Yet researchers in both locations work together as closely as if they were sitting in the same laboratory. Their goal: advancing medical AI without requiring sensitive patient data to cross the Atlantic.
This is made possible by the “AI Exchange,” a collaboration between the Intelligent Imaging Lab at Kiel University (CAU) and the Center for Intelligent Imaging at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). The project was initiated by Claus-C. Glüer and Sharmila Majumdar. Their approach is based on “federated learning.” The underlying idea is simple: “We share models and methods, not patient data. That is precisely the strength of our approach,” Glüer explains.
The “AI Exchange” has since evolved into an AI program capable of analyzing simple X-ray images and predicting fracture risk in osteoporosis patients more accurately than traditional bone density measurements. Especially in regions of the world where X-ray machines are available but specialized diagnostic systems are not, this opens new possibilities.
Through the DWIH’s formats, a technical idea becomes a resilient transatlantic partnership.

However, turning a concept like the AI Exchange into genuine collaboration requires more than innovative technology – it requires personal encounters, formats for exchange, and visibility. This is exactly where the DWIH comes in: it supports Glüer’s team in expanding the partnership with UCSF, creates spaces for professional exchange on federated learning and AI imaging, and ensures that the collaboration gains recognition. “Through the DWIH’s formats, a technical idea becomes a resilient transatlantic partnership,” says Glüer.
Glüer describes the concrete impact of this support as follows: “Direct contact has a twofold effect: intellectually, because California is simply ahead of us in AI, and emotionally. When a doctoral student has their poster praised by a star of the AI scene at a conference, it provides motivation for years of research that can certainly become quite stressful.” Beyond professional inspiration, he also sees something more fundamental at stake: “Especially in times like these, we must preserve and strengthen the transatlantic partnership and the ethos of science.”
For Professor Lucie Heinzerling, everyday life follows a tightly packed schedule: consultations, outpatient care, study center management, interdisciplinary case discussions, toxicity boards – and in between, research and teaching. In San Francisco, another discipline was added: explaining in just a few minutes why an idea matters – and who could help bring it to life. The professor of dermatology and venereology with a focus on dermato-oncology at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich experienced this shift in perspective firsthand.

“Learning, Meeting, Pitching” – these three words are how Heinzerling describes her days in the Bay Area. The setting was the “Women in Entrepreneurship” program organized by DWIH in cooperation with the GUILD Academy: a format designed to support women scientists in transforming research ideas into viable innovation projects – including exchanges with female founders, mentoring, and pitch training.
For Heinzerling, the program opened the door to an innovation ecosystem in which ideas are consistently developed further. “The training modules, which took place in the evenings and were particularly well adapted to women inventors balancing professional responsibilities, were especially valuable. In addition to new knowledge in entrepreneurship, they also strengthened our willingness to take risks,” says Heinzerling. This protected time, free from other obligations, is a key success factor in advancing spin-offs emerging from clinical environments.
This is where DWIH provides support: as both a platform and an accelerator for science-based innovation. It connects researchers like Heinzerling with the right people, creates formats in which ideas can be refined and tested, and highlights where concrete next steps are emerging from cutting-edge German research. For Heinzerling, this means new conversations, new opportunities – and a network that endures.

“I am a molecular biologist, and during my training, I mostly envisaged a career in research. Entrepreneurship wasn’t part of the plan. It was through DWIH New Delhi’s ‘Innovators Connect Tandem’ programme that I first came across the idea of starting my own business. The programme opened a new perspective for me: scientific solutions can make an impact in the real world.
Scientists have many qualities that are needed as an entrepreneur: problem-solving skills, perseverance and the ability to learn quickly. Nevertheless, there are of course major differences between these two worlds. ‘Innovators Connect Tandem’ provided a safe space to explore entrepreneurship without needing to have everything figured out.
The programme connected me with mentors, founders, and fellow researchers. The exposure made me realise that entrepreneurship is not a fixed path, it's something you grow into. Looking back now, it’s meaningful to see how a programme like that can change someone’s life.

I had previously studied in Germany and completed my PhD there, andI first came across the DWIH New Delhi in my home country, India. Later, through the DWIH San Francisco’s ‘Women in Entrepreneurship’ programme, I also had the opportunity to learn about the start-up ecosystem in the Bay Area. Overall, I have benefited extensively from the global network of DWIHs.
Every environment has its own energy and approach to innovation. My experiences in India, Germany and the USA have made me adaptable and open-minded. They have also made me confident to keep going: It led me to co-founding a biotech start-up ‘Renatrix’ in Berlin with my two business partners in 2025.”

Dr Mugdha Lele describes the ‘Innovators Connect – Tandem’ as a unique format. This is primarily due to its binational nature: one participant from India and one from Germany work together to co-develop a potential deep-tech start-up idea over two weeks and present it to a jury of experts. As a health researcher and the Head of Pre-incubation and Learning at the Venture Centre in Pune, she is familiar with the intersection of research and entrepreneurship. The Venture Centre is India’s leading science and technology incubator for deep-tech and research-oriented start-ups. Lele knows that formats like “Innovators Connect – Tandem” are immensely important for aspiring founders: “Establishing early connections between start-up founders and researchers, as well as international ecosystems, is crucial to find co-founders and strategic partners.”
She was impressed by the results of Tandem 2025: “Several interesting ideas were presented on the pitch day. Despite the programme’s short duration, the ideas were worked out in detail.” She foresees immense potential for Indo-German cooperation, “there is high interest in a partnership, particularly in areas such as medical devices and diagnostics, food, nutrition, agricultural technology, sustainability and clean energy.”
Establishing early connections between start-up founders and researchers, as well as international ecosystems, is crucial to find co-founders and strategic partners.

The University of Bonn became a strategic partner of DWIH New Delhi in 2025, although its ties to the DWIH network are not entirely new. The university has already had positive experiences working with the DWIHs in Tokyo and São Paulo. “Thanks to the continuous flow of information from the DWIH centres, we have a much better understanding of how the higher education and research landscapes in Japan and Brazil are developing,” says Prof. Dr. Birgit Ulrike Münch, Vice Rector for International Affairs. “We also hope to benefit from this excellent flow of information through our new partnership with the DWIH New Delhi.”

India is becoming increasingly important for the University of Bonn. “There is clearly enormous potential for research collaborations, as well as for systematically attracting young researchers to our PhD programmes,” says Vice Rector Münch.
Recently, the University of Bonn established a China–India Competence Centre within the Vice Rectorate for International Affairs. However, according to Vice-Rector Münch, cooperation with local stakeholders such as the DWIH New Delhi is essential to increase the university’s visibility in the region. “We hope to organize successful events in India with the DWIH New Delhi and likewise with other partners”, says Vice-Rector Münch.

“When I started working with paper and degradable bioplastics, I suddenly realised how easy it is to work with plastic,” says Koichiro Fukasawa with a laugh. The founder and CEO of the Tokyo-based startup Camino has been developing biodegradable tableware for ten years. “In Japan it isn’t enough for a product just to be sustainable. It needs to look good and feel good in the hand – and ideally it needs to tell a story,” he says.

Fukasawa told his story at the two-day Sustainable Consumption and Production symposium held at the DWIH Tokyo in December 2025, while the audience listened attentively – drinking their coffee from Camino cups. He related how he had experimented with various materials, but had never been satisfied with their quality and durability, until one day he reflected on the significance of paper in Japanese culture. Paper, especially in its handmade washi form, is at the heart of religion, art and everyday life in Japan.

Fukasawa describes the joy he feels now that his business is able to work with many cafes, canteens and hotels. “Our products have made it possible for us to make this sector more sustainable,” he says. Fukasawa’s painstaking approach secured him first prize at the 2024 AsiaBerlin Summit Tokyo, a pitch competition co-organised by the DWIH Tokyo. He was rewarded with the opportunity to travel to the AsiaBerlin Summit in Germany to present his vision to an international audience of experts and investors.
“The insights I gained there were sensational,” he says. “In terms of sustainability, Germany is one of the leading countries in the world. In Berlin, there’s a huge willingness among people to live sustainably.” Fukasawa says he could definitely see himself selling his products on the German or European markets in the long term.

Professor Mehtap Özaslan still clearly remembers how she felt when she arrived at the Expo 2025 centre in Osaka with a delegation from Germany. She was struck by the sheer scale of the Grand Ring and the heat of the Japanese summer – and she was thrilled to see the German Pavilion, where she would shortly be giving a talk on the topic that’s closest to her heart: green hydrogen. “I was so excited,” says Özaslan, who is a professor at the Institute of Physical Chemistry at the University of Hamburg. She had made her first visit to Japan just three years previously, as part of a programme supported by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space to establish a research presence at the University of Yamanashi. “When Professor Katsuyoshi Kakinuma and I started envisaging our work, I sensed how well our two countries work together, how respectfully our two cultures treat each other and how effectively we could work together as a bilateral team,” she reflects enthusiastically.

The beginning of the project in 2022 fired up German-Japanese collaboration on green hydrogen. “I got to know the team at the DWIH Tokyo on my first visit here, and they supported us brilliantly. They put us in touch with major research institutions, and even explained every detail of how the Japanese research sector works.” The DWIH was also represented at the opening of the Japanese-German Green Hydrogen Material Laboratory at the University of Yamanashi in September 2023. The lab was set up to develop low-cost durable catalysts for hydrogen technology.
Since then, the German-Japanese cooperation has expanded to include exchanges for students and PhD candidates. Its future goals include setting up an International Research Training Group Programme for PhD students (known as a “graduate externship”) and a double master’s degree programme taught by the Universities of Yamanashi and Hamburg. “We began our partnership by working from the bottom up,” Özaslan explains. “It was a bold choice, but it really accelerated the process. We recently signed a memorandum of understanding between our two universities.”
The opening ceremony of the Japanese-European Clean Energy Material Research Hub at the University of Hamburg in 2026 included Dr Carsten Walbiner, Head of Section for Research Fellowship Programmes at the DAAD. The DAAD’s Green Hydrogen Research Tour also visited Özaslan’s research units at the University of Hamburg and the Hydrogen Terminal Braunschweig.
“You have to be brave to keep up with the latest developments in green hydrogen applications,” says Özaslan. “We still have a lot of questions to answer in our research, but if we can develop low-cost and more efficient materials and processes, we will be able to make implementing green hydrogen cheaper and more scalable. If we can do that, science will have built a bridge with industry and become a catalyst in its own right.”

How can you safeguard people who have to climb into tanks which are dirty, contaminated or contain corrosive substances? For the Tokyo-based startup Hibot, work like this is already a thing of the past. After inspecting water tanks at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, the Hibot team developed a remote-controlled “float arm”. Their goal is to make work like this safer. Hibot presented their idea at a startup bootcamp in Tokyo in early 2025, explaining how they made a move to Aachen and linked up with RWTH Aachen University. The bootcamp was jointly organised by NRW.Global Business Japan and the DWIH Tokyo.
“In addition to providing advice and guidance to major firms and SMEs, helping Japanese startups gain a foothold in the German market is one of our most important tasks,” explains Dr Carolina Kawakubo, Director and President of NRW.Global Business Japan, the agency of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia which promotes foreign trade. “It’s common for startups to not yet have a completed product or service,” she explains. “That’s what makes a connection to a higher education or scientific institution highly attractive, and we are well placed to draw on the experience and contacts of the DWIH to support this.”
Kawakubo has been Director of NRW.Global Business Japan since 2024. She is committed to promoting aspects of Germany that make it a trend-setter. “Germany has a fantastic mix to offer: it’s very reliable and is centrally located in Europe, while its universities bring through a huge number of talented young people,” she says. “And on top of that, wage costs for highly qualified academic staff are moderate.”
When it comes to the research sector and accessing talented people, we can count on the DWIH Tokyo.

Making the move to Germany is an interesting prospect for Japanese firms right now, since exports are attractive thanks to the weak yen. In addition to this, demographic changes in Japan are resulting in falling employment rates across many sectors. “In the current climate, even SMEs in Japan which have never previously had any international ambitions are considering making a move abroad,” Kawakubo explains.
This is where NRW.Global Business Japan’s longstanding links to the DWIH come in. “When it comes to the research sector and accessing talented people, we can count on the DWIH Tokyo as a partner to organise events and provide guidance.” The office of NRW.Global Business Japan is only ten minutes’ walk from the DWIH’s base in the German Cultural Centre, which makes the work even easier. “When we make useful contacts, it’s pretty much just a matter of going across the street,” she observes.
Keeping everything in sync through strategic research funding: At the top of Japan’s innovation strategy are the major funding organisations, which possess huge financial resources. The Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) is a key partner for the DWIH Tokyo. Its work includes funding the ambitious “Moonshot” programme for radical innovations – such as making it possible to live to the age of 100 without major health-related limitations. National research centres: excellence in prevention and application: The fusion of the National Health Center for Global Health and Medicine (NCGM) with the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) to form the Japan Institute for Health Security (JIHS) marked a major milestone. The new national control centre consolidates cutting-edge clinical medicine with global infection monitoring. Led by Nobel prize winner Professor Shinya Yamanaka, the Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA) in Kyoto is setting new standards in regenerative medicine.
